Monthly round-up

Energy news round-up: August 2026

Ofgem confirms a 4% price cap rise for October, the Environment Agency explains ESOS Phase 4, and forecasters expect a very strong El Niño.

Ofgem: price cap up 4% from 1 October

On 26 August Ofgem announced that the household price cap will rise from £1,663 to £1,723 a year for October to December. Wholesale prices had risen 11% in three months, driven by tensions in the Middle East. The cap only applies to homes, but it is a useful signal of where the wholesale market, and therefore business contract prices, are heading.

Environment Agency sets out the ESOS Phase 4 changes

The Environment Agency’s latest ESOS newsletter (issue 43) explained the new Phase 4 requirements. The qualification date is 31 December 2026 and the compliance deadline is 5 December 2027. New reporting fields include the number of sites covered by energy audits and ISO 50001 certification details.

The biggest change is a shift from planning to proof. Organisations must now report the savings achieved from their previous action plan, which is far easier with metered data for each site or system.

El Niño: over 90% chance of a very strong event

The US Climate Prediction Center’s 13 August update gave a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño this winter, and a 69% chance of a historic event stronger than any since 1950.

Hottest day of the summer

Hartpury College in Gloucestershire reached 38.2°C on 13 August, the highest temperature of the summer.
